FOOTBALL

DUE to the graduation of practically all of last year’s grid squad, Coaches Lester Kibler and Earnest Wilde had quite a difficult job in trying to build up a suitable team to put on the field for the opening game September 21.
Prospects of having even a fighting team looked bad at first, but Wilson’s coaching staff never loses hope and as the day for the opening game approached we found Coach Wilde’s Junior Varsity of 1934 the “Fighting Presidents” of 1935.
The team looked green at first, just as any inexperienced gridiron hopefuls would look, but as the season progressed we find the Wilsonites losing this complex of inexperience and going out into each game more determined than ever to “bring home the bacon.”
With only three lettermen returning from the 1934 squad—Sam Herbener, Walter Laughon and Paul Terry—we can easily see what a problem the Wilson coaches had to overcome. When we look back over the grid record of 1935 we can really appreciate how much the Wilson mentors accomplished with such a little bit to perform this accomplishment.

BASKETBALL

FACED with the same situation as in football, that of lack of experienced ballplayers, Coach Lester Kibler again had to depend on the members of the 1934 Junior Varsity basketball squad to rebuild a team which was based on the playing of the only returning letterman, Sam Herbener.
Prospects for the coming basketball season looked discouraging, as reports from other
schools were to the effect that they were to place championship teams on the hardwood floor. These reports would cause the average Coach, who knew that his chances for a State Championship team were practically hopeless, to lose hope, but these reports did not even phase the mind of Wilson’s esteemed mentor, who whipped into shape a fast and scrapping basketball five composed of Sam Herbener (forward), Joe Massey (forward), Joe Golombeck (center), Jimmy Jones (guard) and Frank Brown (guard).

BASEBALL

WITH only four returning lettermen—Walter Laughon, Sam Herbener, Herbert Simpson and Jack Boone—Coach Lester Kibler had quite a difficult job in trying to replace those lost by graduation. As the first call for candidates was issued we find about forty supposed-to-be ballplayers reporting for the first sandlot practice.
Although the newcomers looked green and inexperienced, we found that as the opening game of the Tidewater Interscholastic Baseball l.eague approached, the Wilsonites put a presentable team on the field.
The baseball team, though represented with five new faces, has, so far this season, made a record not at all to be ashamed of.

COACH WILDE is again attempting to accomplish the seemingly impossible—to turn out a winning track team. The lack of a proper place to practice, limited equipment, and small number of candidates make his task a difficult one. This year’s squad, composed of three lettermen—Captain Etheridge, Harry Click, Beverly Vaughan—and several others, including Golombeck, Nagle, Brown, Diggs, Esleeck, Britt, Whitehurst, Austin and Ruett, are showing fine spirit and are looking forward to a more successful season than last year.
The following meets have been scheduled by Managers Daniels and Hockman:

SCHEDULE  AND  RESULTS
April 17
Hampton at Hampton. Wilson, 33½ Hampton, 65½. This meet was Wilson’s first test and also was the first test for many of the men. Hampton proved stronger in some events than was expected and Wilson also took some points which were a surprise. Harry Click proved the high point man, taking first places in the 100 yd. Dash, 220 vd. Dash and the Broad Jump. Joe Golombeck took Wilson
other first; this was in the Discus. Austin, Etheridge and Britt were
credited with second places, and Vaughan, Esleeck, Brown and Ruett with third places.
