FOOTBALL
BECAUSE most of the lettermen had graduated, prospects for the 1937 football team were not the very best. However, Wilson’s coaching staff set to work developing their gridiron hopefuls into a team.
As the season progressed we found that the team was no longer green and inexperienced but working like a machine which worked smoother every game. The 1937 season came to a close as the Wilson Presidents met the Tech High Smithies of Atlanta in an intersectional game on Thanksgiving Day. Tech High was undefeated and regarded as one of the outstanding high school elevens in the South. Wilson was beaten 21-7, but held the powerful Smithies at bay throughout the first half. A last period drive won the game for Tech High.
As we look back over our grid record of 1937, we can appreciate the work of both the coaches and the boys in building up a team of which we can be proud.

BASKETBALL
WITH a squad of six veteran players returning for service, the Presidents looked forward to a very successful basketball season. Unfortunately they got off to a bad start by dropping their first game to a strong team from St. Mary’s .Academy. Not letting this discourage them, they broke into the winning column at the expense of Hampton. .After suffering several hard defeats the Presidents rallied to take Salem and the freshmen from Roanoke College. Then the games were “nip and tuck,’’ with the fighting Presidents breaking about even.
The co-captains of the team were Massey and Jones. Massey has the record of being one of the highest scorers in Tidewater, while Jones is a fine all-round player.
Although the ’38 team was not the best Coach Kibler has produced it was a credit to the school. The team showed pluck, good sportsmanship, and the fighting spirit which is typical of Wilson.
