1950 Class Roster
SUMMARY OF 1949 - 50 SEASON

Points and Pigskins
Wilson 24 --- Cradock 6
Wilson 18 --- Norview 0
Starting the season with a new coach and new formation, the '49 edition of the "Fighting Presidents," sparked by brillant play of Roy Hendricks, Bill Prince, and Bobby McCarter, surprised all of the 6,000 rain-drenched fans by downing their their arch rivals, 24 to 6.
Wilson 25 --- Raleigh 0
Wilson 24 --- Randolph Macon 0
Wilson 18 --- Newport News 7
Wilson 6 --- Petersburg 20
Just to show that the Cradock victory wasn't luck, the Prexies, led by Sidwell and Grieback in the backfield, and Dutch Schwalenberg and Capt. Canonzado in the line, contiued their "T" party and gained their second conference victory by dowing the Norview Pilots 18 to 0.
Continuing their torrid pace, the Presidents ran into the big Raleigh "Caps."  Although much lighter than their opponents, the little Prexies showed they had the stuff by defeating Raleigh, 25 to 0.  New stars were born as Griesback, Sidwall, and Schwalenberg led the way.  Biedsoe added the first extra point of the campaign.
Opening up with a dazzling aerial attack, the "T" minded Presidents literally passed the Yellow Jackets dizzy.  Using the whole squad Coach Grey showed the fans what to expect in the future.  With Minigis, Johnson, Alexander, W. Prince, Henderson, Buell, and Baker all sharing honors, the Prexies spilled Randolph Macon J.
V., 24 to 0.
After getting off to a slow start which found them trailing, 7 to 6, at the end of the half, the Prexies made their victories five in a row by winning over Newport News, 18 to 7.  Outstanding in this bruising contest were Pop McFadden, Mac Dowdy, Bobby Wentz, and Alton Allen.
Playing their first day game of the '49 campaign, the Presidents suffered their first defeat at the hands of the Crimson Wave of Petersburg.  The Prexies found the Daymen too much for them as they fell from the ranks of undefeated, 20 to 6.
Wilson 13 --- Maury 13
Wilson 0 --- Hopewell 28
Wilson 7 --- Granby 0
Wilson 28 --- Danville 13
Back on their home field, the Presidents again found the road a little rough as they ran into the Muary Commodores.  The Prexies watched a lead of 13 points, which they had built on the strength of two touchdowns by Charles Sidwall, dwindle and were forced to settle for a tie.
The championship-bound Hopewell Blue Devils came to Portsmouth anxious to keep their record clean.  After an early score, the Presidents held the visitors in check until the last quarter.  Then, in the last few minutes, everything happened to the home team. Hopewell scored three quick touchdowns to give them a 28 to 0 victory.

The Presidents journeyed across the river to play Granby.  The Comets, after losing two of their previous three games, were picked to be an easy mark for the Presidents.  Instead, the locals were held scoreless for three quarterds.  In the last quarter, a pass from McCarter to Sidwall clicked to give the Prexies a 7 to 0 victory.
George Washington High from Danville, came to Portsmouth for the annual Thanksgiving game.  Although many of the usual starters were on the bench with injuries, Wilson had little trouble scoring.  Substitutes saw a great deal of action in the 28 to 13 victory.  The win gave Wilson the Eastern District Championship..

FOOTBALL
For the first time in the history of the school the Presidents blossomed out with the T-formation.  That it proved successful is brought out by the season's record of seven wins, two losses, and a tie, which was good enough to bring the Eastern District title to Wilson.  And all this from a team which no one expected would be much of a threat when the season opened because of the loss of key players through graduation.
The success of this year's team is a tribute to Head Coach Woody Gray and his able
assistants, Charles McClurg and Pete Sackon.  Because of their basic knowledge of fundamentals and their ability to instill these into team members, and because, by example, they were at all times gentlemen, with understanding and patience, the Presidents were inspired to play clean, hard football throughout the whole season.
This was Coach Gray's first year as head man.  He was elevated from his position as assistant coach last year when Coach Woodson resigned.  How does he rate the boys?  Ask any member of the team.

Basketball, like football, appeared at Wilson in a new dress this year.  Coach McClurg introduced local fans to the Kentucky brand of basketball, which proved to be a most crowd-pleasing type of play.  As this book goes to press, the Prexies show a record of six wins and one loss in Conference play.
