he Woodrow Wilson Literary Society, this year, has been quite successful in realizing its ideals and in bringing before the students the possibilities and opportunities afforded by a literary society. There have been many debates,
T
all of which were most profitable to the members.
Some of the subjects that have been debated during the past year are; Government Ownership of Public Utilities, United States and the League of Nations, and Direct Primary and Convention Nominations, besides others of a more local or personal interest. The Woodrow Wilson aided the Booster’s Club in presenting a program, by which they sought to bring more clearly to the students the advantages and opportunities afforded by the literary societies of the school. The subject for the state debate was; “Resolved, That the methods of direct primary nominations in local and state elections is preferable to that of conventions.’’ This debate was entered into wholeheartedly by the society.
While the activities of the club are not spread widely over the school, the club feels that all its members have received innumerable benefits, and the debates participated in by all members have aided them immeasurably

the activities of the society for this school year only. We started out in September, 1925 with an enrollment of seventy-five and we have had an average attendance of about sixty at every meeting.
This year we decided to study modern plays. We have had talks on plays and given a few playlets at our meetings. At Thanksgiving a delightful little play, “Finding the Thanks in Thanksgiving,” was presented in the auditorium and the Christmas play we gave was a beautiful program also. Etta Marshall, our former President, who was honored by being elected Student Council President, was forced to resign the presidency of the Lanier Literary Society. Helen Williams, our Vice-President, was elected President and Louise White was elected Vice-President.
Our activities closed this year with a jolly picnic at which each one enjoyed herself immensely.

It I could write a verse or two
About our Wilson Hi,
I’d try a rhyme to tell about
The best Society.
It dates ’way back to Shakespeare,
Though it’s only eight years old!
It may yet produce a genius
From our modest little fold.
There is something in a name, you know,
(We differ from our Will)
And we gather inspiration
From his plays and poems still.
This is the motto we would keep,
“To thine own self be true,’’
We hope to live up to it
And be straight in all we do.
On certain Thursdays of the month
We meet, and you’d then see
These literary Sophomores
Have “some” society!
We all then get together.
And friends are made from foes
With fine debates, first pro, then con.
And oratory flows!
We put across a gay tableau,
we even go ahead
And try a play of Shakespeare,
Where actors “fear to tread.”
But we come to earth with rapture
When “eats” are handed ’round.
With a feast less literary.
You can hardly hear a sound!
Here’s to you, jolly Sophomores,
There is truth in this small rhyme.
“If you want to have a good time,”
Join the “Shaky’s” every time!

SOCIETAS ROMANA
HE Societas Romana was organized last September under the supervisionof Miss Hildegarde Barton. This is the first Latin Club that has ever existed among the Freshmen in the history of Woodrow Wilson High School.
T
It was started to create more interest among the students in their subject, and it has grown from twenty to about fifty members in one year. Next year, with an increased membership, we hope to carry on our activities and become one of the largest societies in Woodrow Wilson High School. What we stand for, and some of the things we do, you will find in the following rhymes:
S stands for socii, comrades are we;
O is oratores, speakers we’ll be;
C stands for carmina, songs we’ve been taught;
I is imagines, thoughts we have brought;
E is edacitas, proneness to eat;
T is Tirones, the Freshmen we meet;
A is antiqui, the classics we read;
S stands for studium, zeal, there is need;
R is Romani, the Romans of old;
O is for optimi, best we are told;
M stands for mores, their customs of life;
A is audacia, boldness in strife;
N stands for natio, race of renown;
A is for amor, our love we’ll hand down
