The 1959-60 basketball season outlook was not too impressive. The team had lost all but a few reserves from the previous year's Eastern District champions. The ball club was young and inexperienced, but it was determined.
The opening games left Prexie followers bewildered regarding who might turn out to be outstanding performers. Was the star to be Tommy Smith, who dropped in 16 points in the opening contest; Jerry Hasty, who was setting the pace at the foul line, and "grinning down" the opposition in addition to play-making and ball-hawking; Albin Deans, who seemed to have a calming effect on the young, easily excitable squad; Howard Blackman, who never got much publicity, but showed signs of being a good all-around player; Jay Vee graduate Jerry Lawson, who was a rebounding and scoring threat. Each of the above, at one time or another, showed signs of becoming an outstanding player.
The first loss came at the hands of the unpredictable Norview Pilots, a team with ups and downs, and almost as much uncertainty as to its own powers as were the Presidents. The locals lost two more contests in the following weeks, both to the powerful Warwick Farmers, who turned out to be District champions.
With three games remammg, the Presidents were in a first place tie with Maury and Warwick, but they dropped them all, two in overtime. The first loss was to Maury; the second to Newport News; the last, to Jefferson of Roanoke. These defeats sent the Prexies into the District tournament in fourth place.
In tournament play they downed Church land in the opener, 46-39, and then then proceeded to give Warwick their biggest scare of the season. For more than three quarters Wilson played a near-perfect game, and was leading by eight points. Then Warwick went into a full court press, and the gap was suddenly closed. With the score tied at 45-45, and two seconds showing on the clock, Warwick sank the basket that sent them into the finals, depriving the Presidents of a spot in the State tournament. In the consolation game Wilson defeated Norview 63-47.
Season honors went to Lawson who made first team All-Eastern District, and second team All-Tournament; to Deans who was elected to second team All Eastern District, and first team All-Tournament; to Hasty, Smith, and Rhodes who gained honorable mention on the All-Eastern District. Hasty also received honorable mention on the All-Tournament team.

Smith relaxes on Pilot's back as he lays one in for two points.
