BAND
Mr. Brown directs.
Our high school band has certainly experienceda full year. Football season was an excellent beginning, for the band learned many new formations, and the colorful uniforms, which were purchased last year, were used the entire season. During the fall, all day trips to Hopewell and Smithfield were taken, and, of course, the band appeared in many civic affairs held in Portsmouth.
The February term ushered in the concert season, and immediately the music for the District Contest and Spring Music Festival was prepared.
Eleven members of the Wilson band attended the All-State Workshop Band in Newport News in February. All profited by this week-end.
One of the highlights of the entire year came on February 26, when the group journeyed to Richmond for a sight-seeing tour. At night they heard the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra concert at the Mosque. This was the first time in several years that the band went out-of-town without playing in a concert or a parade.
This year saw the beginning and completion of the modern music building in which the band will make its home. Mr. Brown and the band members appreciate this new building, for it provides ample rehearsal space, and storage for all the equipment.
Under Mr. Brown’s direction, the individual players are constantly striving to improve their musicianship; thereby improving the whole organization.

It takes practice.
In action.
