Eight Wins —Two Losses: That's The
Story Of Our 1950 Season
The 1950 season brought many surprises from the Fighting Presidents.

Although not a great team, it was an aggregation
which produced a host of thrills for Prexie followers.

In his second year as head coach, Woody Gray,
ably assisted by line coaches Charles McClurg and
Sonny Davis and backfield coach Pete Mills, welded a strong offensive unit which scored at least two touchdowns in all but two games. Although the defense looked spotty at times, it functioned well enough to hold the opponents to an average of a little over seven points a game, while Wilson scored, on the average, eighteen points per game.

The Prexies opened the season by winning their first six games before taking it on the chin from Maury and Hopewell on consecutive week-ends.  However, they finished strong, scoring decisive vic-tories over Granby and Norview.

One of the biggest surprises to Prexie fans was the 19-7 Homecoming victory over the Arlington Gen-erals. This game was witnessed by ten thousand fans, among them being many old grads who returned from different sections of the country for the week-end celebration.
This early season win first attested to the strength of the team, built by Goach Gray around 19 returning lettermen.

Although no State Championship was won by the Presidents, the season’s record certainly bears out the great calibre of play turned in by the 1950 edition of the Wilson Presidents.

WILSON 35 - CRADOCK 6

With 10,000 fans looking on, Bobby McCarter, Wilson’s T-toctician, engineered Wilson to an im-pressive 35-6 victory over an outclassed group of Admirals. The outcome of the game was never in doubt as McCarter turned loose such hard-running backs as Sidwell, Hendricks and Co-Captain
Griesbach.
WILSON 27 - SOUTH NORFOLK 0

Starting slowly against an outweighed and out- manned Tiger eleven, Wilson finaly got rolling to four touchdowns in the second and third quarters.
Although beaten by 27 points. South Norfolk played
better than the score would indicate. The pass catching of Cully Dalton stood out, while Wilson’s offense rolled on.

WILSON 28 - RALEIGH 12

Journeying into the Tarheel State to meet Raleigh, Wilson was given a scare before winning out. Although the defense looked weak, Co-Captain Jimmy Turner was the bright spot, making tackles all over the field. The offense looked much sharper than it did in the first two games. Hendricks and Henderson each scored touchdowns on long runs.
WILSON 19 - ARLINGTON 7

Led by McCarter’s two touchdowns, one a 64 yard punt return, Wilson turned back Arlington in the first real test of the year. 10,000 Homecoming fans saw the Prexies play their best game of the young season. In contrast to the Raleigh game, Wilson displayed a sharp defense. Al Male’s alert pass defense was outstanding.

WILSON 25 NEWPORT NEWS 13

Now ranked among the powers in the state, Wilson
took advantage of Newport News fumbles to set up three of the four touchdowns. Scoring for the Prexies were Hendricks, Riggs, Schwalenberg and Frankos, Defensively, Dick Journee and Jimmy Wynn turned in sterling jobs with their line play.

WILSON 21 - PETERSRURG 13

The Presidents, looking for another state crown, continued their winning ways by taking the measure of the Petersburg Crimson Wave. It was a hard fought game all the way. Charlie Sidwell spelled the difference in the game with his two touchdown runs, one a 61 yard jaunt. The other touchdown was scored by Carter Wiggins when he scooped up a Petersburg punt which was blocked by Campbell and Farleigh. Center Alton Allen turned in an excellent job of backing up the line for the Prexies.

WILSON 0 - MAURY 7

Under the lights of Foreman Field, the Presidents saw their hopes of another State Championship blasted by a precision-like Maury team. Outgained on the ground and in the air, the Prexies never could get started. Jerry Mingis, who performed brilliantly at tackle all year, was never any better. His defensive play was the only consolation for the Prexie followers.

WILSON 0 - HOPEWELL 27

Absorbing their second straight licking, the Presi- dents gave the Hopewell Blue Devils, defending State Champions, a run for their money before bowing. Although Clarence Baker recovered three Hopewell fumbles deep in enemy territory, Wilson coudn’t get a sustained drive going. Dutch Schwalenberg, Wilson wingman, stopped everything that was run around his end, giving a sparkling defensive performance.

WILSON 19 - GRANBY 0

Pop McFadden started his first game at quarter-back, and the Prexies got back on the victory trail with a 19 - 0 win over the Granby Blue Gomets.
With Sidwell taking a pitchout in his own end zone and going 105 yards, Hendricks’ swivel-hipping 65 yards on a screen pass, and Griesbach plowing over from the one yard line, Granby was never in the
game.

WILSON 14 - NORVIEW 7

The Presidents completed their most successful season since winning the 1947 State Championship by defeating a good Norview team by the slim margin of 7 points. Playing their last game for Wilson in addition to the boys already mentioned were Bubber Barnes, Jimmy Early, Eddie Prince, Rufus Dalton, Carter Valentine, and Eddie Sharrett. It was these boys who gave Wilson the reserve strength to field a team of which any school would be proud.
