Wilson 13  -----  Oscar Smith 16
Our opening game provided the Wilson eleven with a
disappointing defeat.  Playing undoubtedly the best team to come from South Norfolk in over twenty years, our defenses were completely befuddled by the Tigers' tricky single wing.  Our outstanding points were the fine defensive plays of Stewart Hopewell and the brilliant runs by fullback B. B. Hamaker and halfback Ernie Williams.  Ernie added our only two tallies, and Kenny Snyder an extra point.

Wilson 13  -----  Hopewell 6
Fresh from their bitter defeat at the hans of South Norfolk, Wilson entered the Hopewell game well prepared, with an overpowering desire to win.  The brilliant running of David Williams, and blocking of Bob Hopewell provided the spark that lighted the team on to victory.  Our defensive line for the first time in the season showed a united effort.  Outstanding: Bob Tieslau, Tiny Tim Smith--center, and Frank Car-mines--tackle.
Wilson 7  -----  Norview 13
This game developed into one of the outstanding battles of the season.  Neither team was able to make decisive ground gains, so both were forced to pass.  Early in the first quarter Wilson scored via a long pass to David Williams.  However, later in the same quarter.  Norveiw tallied with an almost identical play.  The Presidents' defenses stiffened in the second half allowing only twelve yards rushing. Our pass defense, however, was not good, and the Pilots gained their de4ciding touchdown through another serial attempt by their dead eyed quarterback.

"Let's win this one for B.B." A crushing victory was the method our squad used to show its sentiments to their recently injured star fullback, B. B. Hamaker.
Let by the spectacular running of the quarterback, Ronnie Davis, and the superb offensive and defensive blocking of tackle Frank Carmines, the team literally rolled over the Generals.

Wilson 19  -----  Hampton 14
Wilson 21  -----  Churchland 0
Fired by their recent success against Washing & Lee, Wilson entered the Hampton game confident, although a definite underdog.  Wilson broke the ice on a thrilling 80-yard punt return by quarterback Ronnie Davis for the initial tally.
The Presidents sparked offensively by backs Ronnie Davis and Willie Collins, and defensively by a hard hitting line, easily routed the Truckers.
Davis gains short yardage against Granby.
Wilson 32  -----  Maury 0
Wilson 7  -----  Annandale 7
The Wilson-Maury rivalry is probably the oldest in the south.  Although the Presidents entered this game as a heavy favorite, odds were evened by an early injury to quarterback Ronnie Davis. Davis was unable to re-enter the game, the floundered during the first half. The second half was a changed with the leadership of Hopewell and Ridenour.
One of the harder fought games of the season would be an apt description of this contest.  Both teams gave their all in spectacular defensive duel.  Outstanding were center Tiny Smith, guard Jim Todd and tackle Frank Car- mines.

Wilson 0  -----  Granby 12
Wilson 27  -----  Warwick 6
The game was not that lopsided. The game in a nutshell --- Wilson couldn't do anything right, and Granby couldn't do anything wrong.
Spurred by last years' bitter defeat, the Wilson eleven went into this final contest seeking revenge. The Prexies were in complete command from kick-off to the final whistle.

Wilson was most proud of its 1958-59 basketball squad. This team not only proved itself probably the best in the history of the school by completing the regular season undefeated, but also won the school's first Eastern District Tourna-ment title.
Captained by Robert Shibley, the starting team was composed entirely of seniors, four of whom, Ronnie Davis, Butch Carto, Jimmy Harris, and Shibley, played together for three years.  The other member, John Vaughan, had only the previous year's experience behind him.
The '59 Presidents displayed an over-all balance that rendered them almost unbeatable.  Seldom in any game did the team find itself with less than two players scoring in double figures.  Another key to success was team work and speed.  The team literally ran its opponents apart, so much so that they were called "The Greyhounds.".
The Eatern District Tournament proved no trouble for the spirited prexies. Knocking off Suffolk 56-41, and Norview 70-58, the team again faced its arch rival from Newport News.  The Presidents, however, took the initiative, and held a 12 point lead at half-time. Fighting off a fourth peroid rally, they coasted to a
45-50 victory, and thus broke their rival's three year run on tournament championships.  After the game, John Vaughan was honored with the "Most Valuable Player" award, presented by the Portsmouth Sports Club.
Shibley led the team with a 16.4 average per game scoring column. Following behind were Carto with 11.3, and Vaughan with a 11 point average.
Team members attained the following individual honors: Shibley and Carto, Eastern District first team; Davis, Easter District second team; Vaughan and Harris, Easter District honorable mention.
After the District Tournament, Shibley, Carto, and Vaughan gained berths on the first All-Tournament team, while Davis made the second team.
In All-City voting, four Wilson Players, Vaughan, Carto, Shibley, and Davis were elected to the first team.
Shibley was named on the All-State tournament second team, and eventually named on the All-State first team.
