Season  in  Review
The 1961-62 basketball season proved to be a very successful one despite the loss of Jerry Lawson and Carl Rhodes in the middle of the season. Lawson and Rhodes, mainstays on Coach Jack Ryder's 1960-61 Eastern District championship team, were lost to the squad through expired eligibility and mid-year grad-uation. A preview of what was to come was indicated when Rhodes chose to attend graduation exercises with his classmates while, at the same time, the Prexles were squeaking by a highly rated Great Bridge team by a score of 44-43 at the other end of the building. Lawson, playing his last game, led the way in rebounding and scoring.
The next game with Suffolk, a team that had been beaten very easily by 59-.41 one week earlier, made it even more obvious that this would not be the same Wilson team. The Red Raider, defeated the Presidents by a score of 60-47. Still stunned by this loss, the Presidents restored a certain amount of confidence in the minds of everyone by downing a big Norview team to jump back into the running. The score was 58-48. The next stop was the Norfolk Arena for a game against Maury, and again the Prexies found themselves on the short end of the score, 58-56, against a team that previously had been defeated quite easily. It became more and more evident as the season wore on that Lawson and Rhodes were sadly missed.
Seniors Ray Baker, a starter on last year's team, Larry Keenan, the number six man for two years, and Larry Bryant who was playing his first year of varsity ball, along with sophomore Larry Schwab and freshman David Moody, made up the starting five. Alternating with Bryant at guard was Larry Davis, who also was a key figure on the
1960-61 team. The Presidents went on to post wins over Warwick in overtime, 55-53, a tall Princess Anne team, and county-rival Churchland.
A rugged last half schedule put the Prexies on the road against an up-and-coming Hampton team, Cradock and Newport News, a team which had not lost a home game since 1956. It was the Presidents who turned the trick by a score of 77-54. Appearing to be an entirely different team away from home, the locals could not manage a win in any of these games, and wound up in fifth place when tour-nament time rolled around.
First round District tournament pairings pitted Wilson against Maury on February 29. The Commodores, led by guards Chuckle Monnette with 23 points and Dickie Joynes with 18, went on to an easy win, 63-43. The only bright spots for Wilson fans were an early 9-3 first quarter lead, and the steady play of Baker and Schwab who- scored 13
and 11 points respectively. This loss marked the first time in the nine year history of the tournament that a Wilson five failed to record a first round victory.
Rounding out the squad were Langhorne Smith, Kenny Coles, Steve Justice, David Kreger, Benny Horton, and Johnny Blackman. Junior varsity standouts Kenny Barnes and Dick Esleeck were added to the squad before tourna-ment time.
The season record of 16 wins and 7 losses increased Coach Ryder's over-all record to 111 victories as against 26 losses, a very enviable .810 percentage for his six years of coaching the Wilson Presidents
McCarty has the rebound under control against Churchland.
Wayland and Barnes control boards against Catholic.
Barnes has as good a chance for this one as the two Truckers.

Row one: Dickie Esleeck, John Mullins, Tommy Thompson, Richard McCarty. Row two: Danny Gilbert-manager; Butch Phelps Walter Nuckols, Linwood Orenduff, Mike Martin, Robert Mullen-manager. Row three: Coach Jim Sherrill, DonaldLevitin, Jimmy Wayland, Harvey James, Tommy Barnes.
