Out of 13 matches we only won one.  The team gave 342 points in forfeits over the dual meet season which played a great part in the win-loss record.
"I was disappointed in the number of forfeits but not in the enthusiasm of those who did wrestle.  The team will only graduate one person so next years team should be a strong one if vacant positions can be filled."

"This was a developing year for the girls softball team with a 12-2 record."  Arlene Jaulks was a senior who had the highest batting average amd won MVP.  Lisa Jamison, senior, won the Golden Glove award,  They were the only two seniors that were starters from the Championship teams from 1981 and 1982.  There was a majority of freshmen and sophomores that were required to play first string.  Coach Staples feels there is the makings of a good team if they stick together.
Corrine Krouse is amazed that the Yearbook Staff does not have any more pictures for the softball section.

"The 3-5 season is the best record we have achieved since we have had a soccer program were at Wilson." stated Coach Reel.  "The three victories we had were against teams in which we had not beaten in regular season play.' he concluded.
There were several outstanding players who helped contribute to the successful season.  Among them were Brandon Perkins and Bruce Sykes.  Brandon received MVP award and the Bill Ferris Trophy for the highest grade average on the team.  Bruce was chosen as spring  athlete both for Wilson and the Cidy of Portsmouth.

Tracy Allen sits while Eve Goldblatt nervously awaits her turn.
Although the season ended without the gymnastics team not winning a meet, the individual efforts and sacrifices by its members should not go unnoticed.  A mid-season ankle sprain to senior Eve Goldblatt sidelined her for several weeks.  The same injury to Shelly Goldfarb eliminated her late in the season and into the district meet.  The third senior of the team, Tracy Allen, underwent extensive knee surgery due to an injury she sustained in her first meet of the season.  Along with these three seniors the rest of the team consisted of four freshmen, Deannie Griffin, Donna Hedge, Diana Mitchell, and Denise Gilchrist.  The bright spot of the season's efforts however, came when Eve Goldblatt placed fourth on the uneven bars at the district meet and therefore, became the olnly Portsmouth gymnast to qualify for the regional meet.

An aggressive playing style moved senior Chris Newton to the District Championship.
"The golf team suffered a losing season due to inexperienced players." says Coach Hopkins.  George Kersher led the team to a 2-7 record collecting M.V.P. honors along the way.  Coach Hopkins hopes for improvement as well as more participation next year.

With a record of 1-8 the tennis team was less than impressive, nut they worked hard and played very competitively.  Only two members lettered, they were Chris Newton who reached the quarterfinals of the District tournament and sophomore Curtis Edwards.  Coach McEachern looks forward to next year.

"The team could have achieved more if there had been more concentration on their events". says Coach Mundy.  A 1 and 4 record was due to the young inexperienced team, with their only win coming from Churchland.  Wilson finished third at the City Meet, but the school was well represented by each team member.  The girls 400 meter relay team was vertually unbeaten, consisting of Sebrena Britt, Venezia, Kemmie Bailey, and Regina Hawkins.  Iola Faulks and Venezia Burney advanced to Regionals with Regina Hawkins advancing to the State finals in the high jump and 100 meter hurdles.
