After a slow start, the Wilson varsity basket-ball team fought its way to a respectable 11-9 record this season. The team advanced to the semi-finals of the Southeastern District tour-nament after capturing second place in regular season competition with a 6-3 record.
The Presidents lost three of the first four games they played, all to Eastern District teams. After Christmas they seemed to get their fast-break working, winning nine games and losing only five, four of them by only one point. In the Western Branch game, Robert "Baby" Powell became one of the few players in Wilson history to break the 1OOO-pointmark in scoring.   Team-mate Eddie Powell had an outstanding season, averaging over 20 polnts per game. Eddie McSweeney and James Whitehead frequently scored in double figures.
Wilson defeated J. F. Kennedy of Suffolk by a score of 63 to 58 in the opening round of the Southeastern Tournament on Feb. 22. The Prexies lost, however, to Oscar Smith on Feb. 25 by a score of 56 to 55 in the semi-final round.

The junior varsity basketball team had a 10-8 season in 1971-72. Coach Wayne Prince said that he was "relatively pleased" with the season record. "We won all of the games that could have gone either way except one," commented the coach. In the Kennedy game, they overcame a 20-point deficit to win 70 to 69.
Robert Cooper was the best man on the squad in Coach Prince's opinion. Cooper was the team's leading rebounder and scorer. Guard, Michael Moore, who was moved up to the varsity late in the year, had possession of the ball for the most time. Other outstanding performances were turned in by Johnny Moss and Keith Silver.

The Wilson wrestling team had a fairly successful season in 1972, winning six matches while losing only four. Under the direction of Coach Earl Sweet, several Wi Ison wrestlers gained state recognition. Kenny Moody posted a 10-0 season to earn a first place ranking in the Southeastern District and a third-place ranking in the Eastern Region. Steve Philbrick had a season record of nine victories and one loss, giving him third place ranking in the District and Region. The most memorable match of the year was the opening one against Great Bridge. The first three Wilson matmen were defeated, but after Carl Turner pinned his opponent, every Wilson wrestler pinned his opponent.
In the District Tournament at Wilson on February 11 and 12, three Wilson wrestlers won championships-Carl Turner, Steve Philbrick, and Kenny Moody. Philbrick and Moody also
advanced to the State Tournament in Alexandria through their third-place finishes in the Regional Tournament at Ferguson on February 18 and 19. They took a third-place standing in the State Tournament.
