Cross Country is a vigorous activity which builds physical endurance and self reliance. It requires much physical exercise, running, proper diet, and proper rest.
The cross country team won only one meet this year and one runner, Herb Miller, placed in the district meet, but this was in spite of the excellence of the coaching and the alacrity of his members. Coach Ken Hopkins looks hopefully to next year when inexperience and the small number of runners (the other schools had com-paratively big teams) will not prove to be a handicap to the team.

The 1972 Golf team has four experienced players returning. They are as follows: Jeff Klyver, a senior, who
has improved a great deal since the 1971 season; Mike Scanlon, also a senior, who played in many matches last seasonand may be a pleasant surprise in 1972; Mark Kahlerand Robert Rardon, who both started as freshmen at the end of the 1971 season and as sophomores, can be expected to lead the Wilson team by picking up the slack of players who graduated.
The 1972 Golf season could be another winning one for the Prestdents, and with luck, we may retain the
District Championship for the third straight year.

The outlook for the 1972 tennis team is one of optimism. With five returning letter-men, including three district champions, the team should repeat as district champ-ion.
An innovative motion was passed last year by the Virginia High School League. For the first time, girls may compete in varsity tennis. Coach Phil McMillion certainly plans to use these young ladies in several matches. He says Wilson is fortunate in having four lovely young ladies who are competent tennis players.
Louis Morris and Bobby Sumner were both singles champions last year and should evolve as the team leaders. Mark Kozak was a standout as a fresh man and shou Id continue to dominate this year.
With two starting positions open on the tennis ladder, competition  should be keen
among the eight remaining players to fill these spots.

Gymnastics Team Hosts
Regional Meet at Wilson
The Gymnastics Team is composed of eighteen girls most of whom are beginners. They compete in both the Virginia High School League and in A. A. U. competition. The girls had regular practices on Tuesday and Thursday nights with balance beam practice on Wednesday after-noons. The activities in which the girls were involved were
tumbling, exercise dancing, balance beam, vaulting, and uneven parallel bars. Wilson was proud to have hosted the Regional Gymnastics meet March 4, 1972. The girls who participated in this event were Paula Crawford, Kathy
Eddleman, Kathy Harrison, Sharon Hobbs, Jackie Hollis, Karen Joyner, Van Jordan, Bonnie Johnson, Lisa Jester, Janie Mines, Vickie Mitchell, Linda Myers, Nancy Rickman and Sharon Zirkle. Kathy Eddleman received a bronze metal in tumbling at a meet in Richmond February
19, 1972. Our coaches were Mrs. Mi Idred Clarke and Miss Kay Sellers.

HiII gets it off.
Harris and Powell work up a good sweat.
The Wilson outdoor track team, coached by Joe Langston, should have a fair season in 1972. This year the team has eight lettermen returning from previous seasons, which should give the team a considerable amount of experience. There are also three newcomers who should be helpful, in the opinion of Coach Langston.
In field events, four season Mike Fagan should once again keep Wilson on top in shot-put and discus events. Seniors Kenny Parsons, Kenny Moody, and Junior Robert Earls will be the pole vaulters this year. Rounding out the participants in field events for Wilson are letterman Gene Earles-broad and triple jumps, and rookie Garland Knight-broad jump.
Wilson's traditional strong point has been its sprinters, and this year seems to be no excep-tion. Ken Moody and Andrew Hill will run in the 100 yard dash. Parsons, Hill, Robert Earls, Gene Earles, and Knight will be entered in the longer 440 yard run. Running the halfmile race will be Calvin Buck, Knight, Keith Silvers, and Herb Miller. Buck, Silvers, and Miller are this year's milers. Gary Hamlet will run the grueling two-mile race. Our hurdlers will be Moody, Parsons, Hill, and Robert Earls.

Hockey Team Strives for Successful Year

Although the hockey season was a rainy one, the spirit of the players was great throughout the year. At practice, each girl ran two to six laps, and spent thirty to forty-five minutes improving hockey skills.
Kathy Eddleman made second string All State Hockey Team at the Hockey tournament attended by our team on November 13.
The captain and goalie of this year's team was Michelle Myers. Miss Beverly Copeland coached a good season In which the team won four games, lost three, and tied two.

Our baseball team has six returning lettermen. They are Dana McCormick, John Moss, Buddy Miner, David Van Dorn, Ronnie Peaks, and Coy Godwin. We also have a promising transfer from Oscar Smith High School, John Koch. There are several promising players up from the J.V. team. They are Keith Zirkle,
Donnie Johnson, Keith Lovelace and Mike Lilley. The leading hitters from last year who are returning are Dana McCormick and Buddy Miner. This year's
pitching depth is the team's strong point, whereas hitting appears to be weak. There are several new players who hope to add to the team; they are Eddie McSweeney, Reginald Jones, and Ronnie Narron.
